How to follow a GPX track on a hike
From the file you received to the summit: what to prepare at home, what the phone does on the trail, and how to save battery.
Before you leave
- Open the track and read it: distance, climb, the steepest climbs on the profile.
- Check the map: satellite shows the ground, terrain shows the slopes. Where the publisher allows it (IGN, USGS, basemap.at), download the area for use without signal.
- Charge the phone, and take a battery pack for a long day.
On the trail
- Choose Follow this track and the direction. If you start away from it, the app guides you to the nearest point.
- Keep the phone in your pocket: it vibrates before each turn — two short for left, one long for right — and when you leave the path.
- Glance at the screen for the distance and climb left, your arrival time and the profile of the next kilometers.
No signal?
GPS works without a phone network: your position, the track, the alerts and the figures carry on. Only maps you have not downloaded stay blank where you have not looked at them before.
Save battery
- Turn on Wake the screen for cues: the screen stays off and lights up only for turns, climbs and alerts.
- Use the notification on the lock screen: the arrow of the next turn and your progress, without unlocking.
- Record your own track at the same time — Also record my track — to keep the outing.
Every option is in Follow and record.
