Automating recordings with Tasker

Start, pause, resume and stop a recording, or add a waypoint, from Tasker, Automate or any app that sends Android intents.

What can be automated

Tasker, Automate and similar apps can drive a recording: start it when you mount the bike, pause it at a café, add a waypoint from an NFC tag, stop and save it when you get home.

Starting a recording

Send an intent to the GPX Atlas activity with the action:

com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.RECORD

The app opens and starts recording. It has to come to the screen: Android only allows location tracking to start from an app the user can see.

In Tasker: System › Send Intent, Action com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.RECORD, Package com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas, Target Activity.

During a recording

Send a broadcast to the package com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas with one of these actions:

com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.PAUSE
com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.RESUME
com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.WAYPOINT
com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas.action.STOP
  • WAYPOINT adds a waypoint where you stand; an optional text extra name gives it a name.
  • STOP finishes the recording and saves the track under the date and time.
  • Without a recording in progress, these broadcasts do nothing.

In Tasker: System › Send Intent, Action as above, Package com.ludiccraft.gpxatlas, Target Broadcast Receiver; for a named waypoint, Extra name:Summit.

Good to know

These action names are also listed, ready to copy, in the app under Settings › Help and about › Automation (Tasker).
